Course Offerings
Carpentry/Construction (Introduction)
This course explores basic woodworking skills and techniques through project-based learning. Skills and techniques discussed include: shop and tool safety, reading a tape measure, types and characteristics of woods, finishing, shop and tool maintenance, and basic joinery.
Carpentry/Construction (Intermediate)
This course explores intermediate skills in carpentry, project management, product design, overall shop maintenance, cabinetry production, and CNC manufacturing through project-based learning. Students will also explore career opportunities that use these skills.
Design Foundations I & II
Students learn the basics of drawing, painting, basic design concepts, and 3D art. Students begin to follow their own artistic path and listen to their own instinctive creativity. Students learn to see themselves as artists by creating artwork in pencil, ink, watercolor, acrylic, and clay. Art history from many cultures, both historical and contemporary, may be woven into studio assignments. Students may have the opportunity to exhibit their artwork in a variety of venues and will have many opportunities to work independently. This class is for students who have an interest and motivation to learn about art and art techniques as well as an ability to work maturely and independently.
Digital Media: Beginning 1-2
Students explore contemporary ways in which artists use and create digital works. This course covers a wide array of digital media and pop culture, which may include graphic art, social media, websites, video games, television, and film. This course is centered on students’ experiences and interests, using critical discussion of contemporary culture as a lens. Students produce digital media using a variety of technologies, which may include the Adobe Suite, iMovie, Canva, Pixlr, and more.
Digital Media: Intermediate 3-4
Students create digital works to connect, challenge, and provoke. They use creative problem-solving and storytelling through art to positively impact the world and engage with community partners and designers. Projects may include digital formats such as experimental video, installation, and action-oriented projects. Prerequisite: Digital Media Beginning 1-2.
Printmaking: Beginning 1-2
Students in this class draw, carve, etch, cut stencils, and create plates to be printed by hand and using a press. They explore collagraph, screen-printing, linoleum cut, and etching, as well as numerous other printmaking techniques such as photo transfers.
Printmaking: Intermediate 3-4
Students learn techniques of fine art printmaking, which may include relief printing, screen printing, monotype, stencils, collagraph, and collage. This course covers aspects of printmaking such as tools, inks, paper, plate preparation, registration, and printing processes. and qualities of prints such as overlays, transparency, offset, and multiple images. Students gain the skills and confidence to produce multiple images by hand printing and on a press while exploring personal visual expression. Other topics may include editions, suites, and designation systems. Class sessions consist of independent and collaborative printing, lecture, demonstrations, discussion, and critique.
