Course Offerings

Concert Choir
Concert Choir is a group performance class open to everyone interested in vocal music. This ensemble will perform a variety of SATB choral works covering many genres. Grading is based upon effort, in-class participation, rehearsal etiquette, singing, and written tests, extracurricular rehearsals, and performances. Members will learn the fundamentals of choral singing with a focus on tone production, balance, and style. In addition to concert performances, students will have opportunities to develop solo and ensemble skills for school, district, and state festivals.
  
Guitar (Beginning)
In this course, students will learn the fundamentals necessary to play the guitar. Students will learn various guitar-playing styles, including pop, rock, and classical. Additionally, the class will cover the basics of rhythm, melody, and chord function. Grading is based on effort, in-class participation, rehearsal etiquette, and playing tests. Please note that while the skills and knowledge learned can transfer directly to the electric guitar and bass, the class will focus on the acoustic guitar.
 
Jazz Band (Beginning)
In this year-long preparatory ensemble for students with prior instrumental experience, students develop jazz fundamentals by performing standard and contemporary jazz in a traditional big band configuration. A strong emphasis is placed on jazz style/interpretation, improvisation, and performance. Prior experience on an instrument is required, but no previous jazz experience is needed. Students will perform at concerts, festivals, and other community events. By the end of the course, students are prepared to audition for more advanced jazz ensembles.
 
Percussion
Percussion is a group participation class. Grading is based on effort, in-class participation, rehearsal etiquette, playing tests, extracurricular rehearsals, and performances. Skills taught: rehearsal techniques, music notation reading, stage presence, and the ability to work together. All facets of percussion technique will be explored, including mallets, snare drum, drum set, auxiliary percussion, and drum line. Members may be assigned to perform in a variety of ensembles depending on skill level, and the musical needs of the class, department, and/or school.
 
Piano
In this course, students will learn the fundamentals necessary to play the piano. Students will learn various guitar playing styles, including pop, rock, and classical. Additionally, the class will cover the basics of rhythm, melody, and chord function. Grading is based upon effort, in-class participation, rehearsal etiquette, and playing tests.
 
Symphonic Band
In this year-long concert ensemble, students of various ability levels rehearse and perform a wide variety of literature while continuing to grow in their abilities regarding blend and balance, intonation, rhythmic accuracy, and the production of characteristic tone. Opportunities for differentiation and extension include performance as a soloist and/or in small ensembles. Symphonic Band performs throughout the year at school concerts, school athletic events, community events, and festivals. Students will develop the necessary skills that prepare them for auditions for advanced ensembles. This ensemble may participate in state-qualifying festivals, and students must meet eligibility requirements in accordance with OSAA policy.
